Management of UDS Engages Union Leaders in Key Consultative Meeting
The Management of the University for Development Studies (UDS) held a crucial consultative meeting with the leadership of the various staff unions within the University to provide updates on the state of the institution and discuss pertinent welfare concerns of staff at all levels.
Welcoming the union leaders to the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-hassan, underscored the importance of the engagement, stating that it was intended to offer union leaders first-hand information on the current state of the University regarding issues such as admissions, infrastructural development, new academic programmes and to deliberate on issues affecting staff welfare. He emphasized Management’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and transparent governance structure that prioritizes the well-being and professional development of all staff members.
“This meeting provides an opportunity for us to share key developments within the University and to collectively explore ways to improve the welfare of our esteemed staff. We recognize the pivotal role our unions play in advocating for the needs of staff, and we are keen on ensuring that their concerns are addressed,” Prof. Seidu Al-hassan stated.
During the discussions, the union leaders commended the Vice-Chancellor and the Management team for their proactive approach in engaging them on such critical matters. They expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the University, particularly in the areas of infrastructure expansion and the introduction of new academic programmes. The leaders acknowledged Management’s efforts in enhancing the working environment and improving conditions of service.
Prof, Mamudu Akudugu, The UTAG President lauded the University’s infrastructural development, noting, “It is refreshing to see the strides UDS is making in improving facilities across its campuses. This demonstrates Management’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for both staff and students.”
The President of the Ghana Association of University Administrators, Dr. Stephanie Adongo, expressed optimism about the future of UDS, saying, “The introduction of new academic programmes is a step in the right direction. It not only increases opportunities for students but also broadens the scope for faculty and staff development.”
While acknowledging these achievements, the union leaders also provided constructive feedback on areas requiring further attention. They raised concerns about certain logistical and administrative challenges, calling for more strategic interventions to enhance efficiency in operations. Key among the issues highlighted were staff promotions, timely disbursement of allowances, and the need for increased investment in staff training and capacity building.
In response, Prof. Seidu Al-hassan expressed appreciation for the cooperation and valuable inputs from the unions, assuring them that Management remains committed to addressing their concerns in a systematic and sustainable manner. He reiterated that the University would continue to prioritize initiatives aimed at improving staff welfare, as well as fostering a more enabling working environment for all.
“We deeply appreciate your contributions and suggestions, as they guide us in our decision-making process. Management will remain resolute in ensuring that the welfare needs of all staff are met. We believe that through continued collaboration, we can collectively enhance the growth and development of UDS,” the Vice-Chancellor assured.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both Management and union leaders reaffirming their commitment to ongoing dialogue and mutual cooperation in advancing the interests of staff and the University as a whole.
The Unions present at the meeting were UTAG, GAUA, SSAG, TEWU-TUC, TEWU-GH, and FUSAG.
