The University for Development Studies (UDS) held its landmark 25th Congregation Ceremony on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the Multipurpose Auditorium on its Tamale Campus, bringing together students, faculty, distinguished guests, and family members to celebrate academic achievement and honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the nation.

The ceremony was graced by the conferment of honorary Doctorate degrees on five prominent personalities. Honorees included Alhaji Lawyer Ibrahim Mahama, a distinguished lawyer and philanthropist; Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, a revered statesman and former government official; the late Dr. David Abdulai, recognized posthumously for his contributions to healthcare and humanitarian efforts; Dr. Nong Gao, an influential entrepreneur; and Mr. Nathaniel Nii Sasah Adams Junior, a notable figure in the educational sector. In addition, Alhaji Yahaya Abdulai was recognized with a certificate of recognition for his outstanding service to the community.

The Chairman of the UDS Governing Council, Prof. Wayo Seini congratulated all the graduands and particularly, the honorary awardees and urged the youth to emulate their examples.

In his address to the graduating class of 2024, Vice Chancellor Prof. Seidu Al-hassan commended the students on their academic accomplishments and urged them to embody the values of UDS in their future endeavors. "As graduates of UDS, you are not only equipped with knowledge but also a responsibility to drive positive change in society. I urge each of you to go out into the world as ambassadors of this university, carrying with you our values of integrity, service, and innovation," he said, drawing a loud applause from the crowd.

Prof. Seidu Al-hassan highlighted the university's strides over the years in enhancing its educational offerings and infrastructure. “UDS remains dedicated to providing quality education tailored to meet the needs of the 21st century. Our faculty have intensified research efforts that address critical issues in Ghana and beyond, contributing to a global knowledge base. This year, we've made significant investments in sports and infrastructure, ensuring a well-rounded experience for our students and promoting holistic development,” he stated.

The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the honorees, expressing admiration for their remarkable achievements and urging the youth to look up to them. “Today, we honor individuals who exemplify excellence and dedication in their various fields. I encourage our youth to take inspiration from these leaders and strive for greatness,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Alhaji Lawyer Ibrahim Mahama expressed gratitude to UDS for the recognition. “It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by such a distinguished institution. This honor motivates us to continue serving our communities and contributing to Ghana’s development,” he said, commending UDS for its commitment to academic excellence and community impact.

The ceremony saw the graduation of a total of 4,253 students, with a near-equal representation of genders: 50.6% male and 49.4% female. The Vice Chancellor congratulated the graduates for their hard work and resilience, especially in navigating the challenges of modern-day higher education.

The next Congregation Ceremony of the University for Development Studies is scheduled for April 2025, when UDS will continue its legacy of celebrating academic achievement and fostering leadership for Ghana and the world.
