KENYA 2022 - 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze - So Far, UDS Makes Impact at FUSA Games
At the ongoing Federation of Africa Universities Sports (FASU) Games at the Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya, some of UDS’ star athletes have already won some enviable individual laurels. They, by these feats, have joined an elite and very hard-to-reach club of UDS’ individual medal winners at international universities showpieces.
In the Men’s 100 Meters final, UDS’ Barnabas Kobby Asante Aggeah won gold with a time of 10.29 seconds.
Unfortunately, UDS’ Sarfo Ansah, who represented Ghana at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, and who had earlier recorded the best time of 10.30 seconds in the Men’s 100 Meters heats, came agonisingly close to winning a medal, but pulled a hamstring halfway through the final 100 Meters race and therefore could not get to the finish line.
Emmanuel Dukpe won bronze in the Men’s 400 Meters with a personal record of 47.83 seconds.
Earlier, Peter Antiedu won a bronze medal in the men's 400 Meters Hurdles beating off stiff competition from athletes from the universities such as the University of Johannesburg, the University of Addis Abbaba, and the American University in Cairo, with a time of 55.23 seconds.
Due to the injury suffered by the Ghana Olypmic games representative from UDS, coaches Robert Dwunfuor and Bruhan Abubakar had no option than to fall back on a second team in the 4 x 100 relay final race. Even with team “B” UDS managed to win the silver medal, placing second only behind the University of Ghana.
In the women’s 100 Meters race, Beatrice Boakye, a level 100 Basic Education student excelled during the heats as she left her competitors several meters behind her, even as she crossed the finish line. The energy and power she exerted during the heats probably had a toll on her during the final as she finished third on the day, taking home the Bronze medal.
In all, so far, team UDS has won five (5) medals, 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze.
Meanwhile, the Football team has also qualified to the semi-finals of the football competition at the FASU games.
