GTEC Upholds Suspension of TEWU Representation on University Councils Amid Ongoing Impasse
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has reiterated its decision to suspend the representation of members of the Tertiary Education Workers' Union (TEWU) on the governing councils of Public Universities. This follows an inconclusive meeting held on Thursday, May 22, 2025, between GTEC and the leadership of both TEWU-GH and TEWU-TUC.
The meeting was convened by the Commission in an effort to mediate the ongoing dispute between the two factions of the union regarding rightful representation on university councils. However, the parties were unable to reach a resolution.
In a letter issued by GTEC and copied to the Minister, of Education, the Chairman of VCG, the Chairpersons of TEWU-GH and TEWU-TUC, and all Vice-Chancellors of Public Traditional Universities, the Commission affirmed that its earlier directive communicated in a letter dated May 6, 2025, remains in effect.
“For emphasis,” the letter read, “the Commission’s stance in respect of the suspension of all TEWU members on the various governing Councils of the traditional universities remains, until further notice.”
GTEC noted its continued commitment to resolving the matter and facilitating a return to normalcy in University Governance structures. “It is our hope that the matter will be resolved sooner than later to ensure active participation of the members of the unions on the governing Councils of the public universities,” the Commission added.
The impasse has raised concerns about the impact of the suspended representation on decision-making processes in Public Universities, with stakeholders calling for a swift and amicable resolution.
