FASU Games 2022 - UDS Storms into Football Semi-Final
The University for Development Studies, UDS, thumped one of the surprise packages at the on-going FASU Games in Nairobi, Kenya, the University of Zambia 1-0 on Wednesday to reach the FASU Games soccer Semi-final.
Winger Mohammed Asigri scored the only goal in the 17th minute of the first half through a thunderbolt of a shot outside the 18-yard box. This was after he received a neat through pass from Abdul Wadud who dribbled past two University of Zambia defenders.
The UDS lads who needed a win to ensure qualification to the Semi-finals kept on mounting pressure on the defense of the University of Zambia.
Playing a 4-3-3 formation, the UDS attacking trio made up of Abdul Wadud, Martin Akurugu and Mohammed Sulemana, received the necessary supplies from the midfield which was manned by John, Skipper Mustapha Fuseini and danger man Mohammed Asigri, continued to press for a second goal but the Zambians kept them at bay by resorting to long balls and hard tackles.
The Four-man defense of UDS ensured that for most part of the game the UDS goalkeeper had little to do. But on the few occasions such as on the 55th minute when he was called to duty, the UDS goalkeeper rose to the occasion, punching away a powerful free kick by the captain of the Zambian Team.
At the other end, Martin Akurugu wasted an opportunity for UDS to go two goals up, when he broke clear of the UNZA defense but shot across the face of goal.
Then Peter Abdul Wadud turned the ball wide after Mustapha Fuseini slipped past his marker with some clever step overs.
UDS held on to the lead until the final whistle to advance to the Semi-finals.
